 Barton Tutoring & Dyslexia Screening

  The word “dyslexia” comes from the L atin words “dys” (meaning difficulty) and “lexia” (meaning language, or words). Is your child struggling with reading, spelling, perhaps writing, despite being capable in other areas? In our experience, large inconsistencies in learning that can't be easily explained, can often point to dyslexia.  People of all levels of ability can be dyslexic; in fact, many are very intelligent.

The Barton Reading and Spelling tutoring system is specifically designed to teach reading in a different way - a way that works for the dyslexic brain.  It is an Orton-Gillingham, research based program that works.

Is It Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a learning difference that can cause children to struggle with literacy skills development, specifically it impacts spelling and reading skills. It has nothing to do with intelligence, but rather a different way of dealing with language in the brain. Dyslexia signs and symptoms in school-aged children can include:
  • Reading  below expected level for age
  • Problems remembering the sequence of things
  • Difficulty seeing (and occasionally hearing) similarities and differences in letters and words
  • Struggles with spelling when writing stories, and cannot easily sound out unknown words when reading.
  • Spending an unusually long time completing tasks that involve reading or writing
